We’ve just come from the highest point on the TA- and like all things in life, what goes up must come down. The next 58 miles of trail are very flat, slightly downhill and follow along a gravel biking path.
We decide we need a break from walking and rent some bikes. It’s just the change of pace we needed!

10 March, 2026 (Day 46)
Waking up at 6 AM, we pack up in the dark. We walk up to the local bike shop just as the first light is making its way through the sky.
A few of our belongings fit in the bags tethered to our bikes- water, hat, gloves, snacks and rain gear. The rest of our packs will conveniently be relocated to Lake Ōhau where we pick them up this evening.
It feels like we are on a vacation! As soon as we get our bikes, we are off to a local coffee shop for breakfast and cappuccinos!
The morning goes by quickly as we cycle along a canal. It’s not too hot and the weather feels perfect for a day of biking! Before we know it, we have pedaled over 30 miles and we are arriving at a bakery in Twizel for lunch.
In the afternoon we go another 25ish miles Lake Ōhua where we indulge in a 3 course dinner and an actual room!

Biking leaves us sore in a way that walking doesn’t, but at the end of the day- we are 58 miles further on the trail and in a lot better shape than most days when we walk.
We rest as much as we can- next up is Breast Hill Track and rumor has it there is a good bit of elevation to climb…
Thanks for reading this shorter post about The Adventure!
Here is your reminder to make sure to create your own adventures 😉💙

Hi Jess and Jeremy, This is Larry Compton. I somehow slipped up and didn’t get set up to follow your blog, but most fortunately, yesterday I ran into Jess’s dad and he told me about it. I went home and found the original email about signing up for the blog and now I’m on board. I started reading and couldn’t put it down! Jess, you have a gift for sharing your experiences in words, and the photos are mesmerizing! What a truly amazing adventure of a lifetime! I so look forward to following the rest of your journey and living it with you through your writing and photos! Wishing you perfect weather and safe travels!
